Platform Guide

Learn how to use Tampa.dev — profiles, groups, events, badges, and community features.

MeetPass

MeetPass is Tampa.dev's in-person connection feature. Use NFC tags or QR codes to connect with other community members at meetups, and build a rolodex of the people you've met.

How It Works

When someone taps your NFC tag or scans your QR code, two things happen:

  1. A connection is recorded — the person who tapped appears in your rolodex, and you appear in theirs.
  2. They're directed to your profile — or to a social link of your choice.

Both of you automatically follow each other on the platform (unless you've turned that off).

Your QR Code Pass

Every Tampa.dev member gets a free QR code pass automatically. You don't need to buy anything to start using MeetPass.

To find your QR code:

  1. Go to your Profile page and open the MeetPass tab.
  2. Your QR code is displayed at the top of the page.
  3. Show it to someone at a meetup and have them scan it with their phone camera.

That's it — the connection is recorded and they're sent to your profile.

NFC Passes

NFC passes are physical keychains or tags that you can tap against someone's phone. They work just like the QR code but are faster — just a tap instead of opening a camera.

Claiming an NFC Pass

When you get an NFC pass (from an event, merch store, etc.):

  1. Tap the tag with your phone or have someone scan its URL.
  2. If you're signed in, you'll see a Claim This Pass page with the pass design.
  3. Click Claim This Pass to link it to your account.

If you're not signed in, you'll be prompted to sign in first, then redirected back to claim the pass.

Owning Multiple NFC Passes

You can own as many NFC passes as you want. Each one can have different settings — for example, one could point to your GitHub profile and another to your LinkedIn.

Connections & Your Rolodex

Every time someone taps your NFC pass or scans your QR code, a connection is created. You can see all your connections in the MeetPass tab on your profile page.

Your rolodex shows:

  • Who connected with you — with links to their profile if they have an account.
  • Anonymous connections — people who tapped your pass but weren't signed in. If they sign up later, the connection is automatically linked to their account.
  • When it happened — the date and time of each connection.

Pass Settings

You can customize how each pass behaves from the MeetPass tab on your profile page.

Action

Choose what happens when someone taps or scans your pass:

ActionWhat happens
Profile (default)Visitor is sent to your Tampa.dev profile page
Social linkVisitor is sent to one of your social links (GitHub, LinkedIn, etc.)

To use a social link action, first add the link to your profile's social links, then select it in your pass settings.

Auto-Follow

When enabled (the default), tapping your pass creates a mutual follow — you follow them and they follow you. Turn this off if you prefer to manage follows manually.

Label

Give your pass a name to help you tell them apart if you own multiple NFC passes (e.g., "Keychain", "Lanyard", "Laptop sticker").

Releasing an NFC Pass

If you lose an NFC pass or want to give it to someone else, you can release it:

  1. Go to the MeetPass tab on your profile page.
  2. Find the NFC pass you want to release.
  3. Click Release.

The pass returns to an unclaimed state. Anyone who taps it next can claim it as their own. Your previous connections from that pass are still in your rolodex — they don't disappear when you release the pass.

QR code passes cannot be released since they're tied to your account.

Privacy

  • Your connections are private to you. Other members cannot see your full connection list.
  • Anonymous visitors (people who tap your pass without being signed in) are tracked with an anonymous ID. If they later create an account, their anonymous connections are linked to their new profile.
  • Connection recording is deduplicated — if the same person taps your pass multiple times in a short period, only one connection is recorded.
